..and How It Can Help You Get Care at Be Well Acupuncture
If you have ever found a provider you truly trust only to discover they are out of network you are not alone. Insurance can feel confusing limiting and frustrating especially when you are just trying to get the care your body needs.
The good news is you may still be able to use your insurance at Be Well Acupuncture through something called a network exemption.
What Is a Network Exemption
A network exemption sometimes called a gap exception prior authorization or single case agreement is a special approval from your insurance company that allows you to receive care from an out of network provider at in network rates.
Insurance companies may grant a network exemption when
- There are no in network providers nearby
- In network providers do not offer the same services
- You need a specialized or integrative approach not otherwise available
- You are already receiving care and continuity of care is medically appropriate
Insurance policies vary widely and different companies may use different terms but the goal is the same to allow access to medically appropriate care when there is a gap in available services.
Why Network Exemptions Are Common for Acupuncture Care
Many insurance plans do not contract with licensed acupuncturists. Instead they may only list chiropractors as contracted providers for acupuncture services. When this happens patients may be unable to access the specific type of care they are seeking which creates a gap in care.
At Be Well Acupuncture treatments often include advanced therapies such as ATP Resonance BioTherapy® red light therapy and individualized treatment planning. These services are not always offered by contracted providers which is why patients frequently request network exemptions.
Patients often pursue exemptions because
- They want comprehensive whole body care
- Their condition has not improved with standard approaches
- They need a clinic experienced with complex or chronic issues
- They value continuity of care with a provider they trust

How a Network Exemption Can Help You at Be Well Acupuncture
If approved a network exemption may allow you to
- Use your insurance benefits at in network cost levels
- Continue care with a specific licensed acupuncturist
- Avoid switching providers mid treatment
- Access specialized therapies that support healing
While approval is not guaranteed many patients are surprised to learn this option exists and find it worth exploring.
How to Request a Network Exemption
Insurance companies now require that gap exception or prior authorization requests be initiated by the patient rather than the provider. While this may feel intimidating the process is often more straightforward than expected.
The process typically includes
- Calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card
- Asking to be transferred to the prior authorization or pre certification department
- Requesting a gap exception or single case agreement for out of network acupuncture care
- Explaining that you are seeking care from a specific provider at Be Well Acupuncture
- Noting that your plan does not offer contracted providers who provide the services you need
- Requesting a reference number and the name of the representative you speak with
If your insurance company suggests contracted chiropractors you may explain that you are seeking care from a licensed acupuncturist and that there are no contracted providers offering the same services. If needed you can request that your case be sent for nurse review.
Information You May Be Asked to Provide
Insurance companies often request provider information estimated dates of service and treatment codes. Our office can help supply the appropriate information and diagnosis codes and ensure the correct services are included to support your request.
How Long Does the Process Take
