In recent history, we have learned that we truly are what we eat. What we put in our mouths can also play a significant part in our ability to conceive. With all of the conflicting information on the web, how does one know which foods are the best to support fertility? As an Acupuncturist trained in both modern and ancient nutrition, I know exactly which 10 fertile foods are the best no matter how much you love carbs, your blood type, or your astrological sign.
Eggs are the perfect little package of healthy fats and proteins. It’s helpful to eat eggs before ovulation to help the ovaries produce top-quality eggs. This is especially important for those of you doing IVF. Prior to egg retrieval, eating extra eggs can boost your egg quality. Eggs also provide us with choline, which we need to absorb the folic acid critical to fetal health.
Good fats are a must for fertility. Avocados are used to help with egg quality, balance female hormones, and support pregnancy. It’s a super fertile food!
Biotin is the name of the game with beans. Although beans supply us with many essential nutrients, biotin is hard to find in other foods and we really need it!
Fish provide omega fatty acids, protein, B vitamins, and iron. Salmon is the ideal fish for fertility, but if you hate it then shellfish can be beneficial as well. If you just hate fish, try a supplement.
5. Nuts and Seeds
I think its pretty clear by now that healthy fats like Omega-3’s are crucial to reproductive health. Nuts are also super easy to add to your diet; a handful of almonds or pistachios are a great snack.

- Dark Leafy Greens
Iron, iron, iron! Spinach, kale, collard greens, and chard are full of iron, and we need iron to make babies. Chinese medicine ties iron deficiency directly to infertility. Adding just 3 cups of dark leafy greens to your diet everyday can raise your iron levels in just a few weeks, which can help regulate your cycle and make a better environment for a fetus.
- Blueberries & Raspberries
Protecting your body’s cells from free radicals and aging will help prolong your fertility. In today’s society we’re having babies later and later in life, so protecting our cells is very important.
Easily grown at home and readily available, tomatoes are fantastic for both men and women when it comes to fertility. The key nutrient here is zinc, which helps regulate the production of estrogen and aids in the formation of healthy sperm.
Adding a little lemon to your life is one of the easiest things you can do. Having just 1 or 2 glasses of lemon water helps cleanse the body, especially the liver. In Chinese Medicine the liver is in charge of many things related to conception, so we want it functionally optimum.
